Made In Africa by Arise Magazine

With Made in Africa by ARISE Magazine just one week away from dazzling New York Fashion Week (NYFW), it's time to introduce you to the seven African designers who'll be showcasing their work at the landmark event.

First up in our series of interviews is Fati Asibelua, founder of her own brand, Asibelua, and leading African label Momo. Asibelua gives us an exclusive preview of what to expect from her contribution to ARISE's Spring 2012 Designer Collective - and how those last-minute preparations are going.

What do you think will define S/S 2012 for you?

A sophisticated and cosmopolitan collection with a distinctive African signature that appeals to international women.

What can we expect from your collection?

The collection thrives in contrasts. Expect a contemporary urban African mix of vibrant prints, contrasting textures and futuristic streamlined shapes.

Can you give us a progress report on your collection?

I am thrilled with the wax-print-inspired patterns and tie-dye mixes we have created. The results are lively and bold, yet polished and refined. I am looking forward to seeing the energy on the runway.

What three words describe how you feel as NYFW approaches?

A buzz of anticipation, anxiety and insomnia!

What essentials are you packing that you couldn't do without at NYFW?

One of the things I love about New York is that anything left behind can be found in the city, and then some.
